Launceston Airport has ended the financial year on a high with passenger traffic reaching almost 1.4 million people – nearly 2 percent higher than the previous financial year.

The airport experienced its strongest fourth quarter in history, welcoming more than 316,000 travellers between April and June 2019 an increase of almost 3 percent on the same time last year.
Launceston Airport General Manager Paul Hodgen said he was proud to see the airport’s Domestic passenger volumes bucking recent national trends and rising so significantly.

“I’m delighted that so many people are choosing to visit Launceston and our numbers show that visitation is particularly strong over the cooler months, driven by major events like the Breath of Fresh Air film festival, Agfest, Australian National Musical Theatre Festival and AFL matches held in the area,” said Mr Hodgen.

“Launceston Airport is the major gateway to Tasmania’s north and we are proud to fly the flag for our region by partnering with tourism bodies and stakeholders to promote our region’s key attractions.

“I’m particularly proud of Launceston Airport’s destination marketing campaign conducted using the assets of Jetstar, our largest customer, where one of the airline’s Airbus A320 aircraft flies around the domestic network with Launceston Airport livery showcasing Cradle Mountain, Wineglass Bay, Cataract Gorge and the Bay of Fires. By 30th June the aircraft had already flown 537 sectors, visiting 18 Australian airports and regularly ventured as far afield as Singapore and Bali.

“I’d like to thank Launceston airport staff for their commitment to making the airport a welcoming and positive environment for locals and visitors alike and also Tourism Northern Tasmania for their continued efforts to promote the region’s natural attractions, arts and history.”
