Christmas holiday passenger numbers set to soar at Launceston Airport

Launceston Airport is gearing up for a festive season rush with almost a quarter of a million passengers forecast over the upcoming school holidays.

Between December 20 and February 5, the airport is expected to welcome 224,000 holiday makers with the holiday crowds peaking on January 2 with more than 5700 passengers forecast.

Melbourne tops the list of destinations for the holidays with almost a thousand flights to and from the Victorian capital.

Passengers taking off before Christmas will have the chance to grab some last-minute made in Tassie gifts with a Christmas market in the terminal from December 19 through to 24 showcasing the best local produce from the regions.

Launceston Airport CEO Shane O’Hare said the expanded route offering the airport had worked so hard to achieve was paying dividends.

“Load factors across the board are exceeding 90 per cent and forward bookings for seasonal Perth, Adelaide and Brisbane services have been very strong so we expect a big holiday period here at Launceston,” he said.

“To prepare for the Christmas peak we’ve geared up operations across the airport with extra security, cleaners, retail and operations staff on to ensure your holiday takes off without a hitch.

"We've invested significantly in infrastructure upgrades across the airport to improve the passenger experience and to enable us to deal with these peak holiday crowds.

"If you've forgotten to pick up a gift for someone this Christmas, we've got you covered with a curated collection of incredible artisans and producers in our arrivals and departures hall," he said.

"To make for a stress-free holiday plan ahead and leave plenty of time for check-in and security screening so you can sit back, relax and enjoy the world-class views from our departures hall.
