School holiday passenger numbers set to soar at Launceston Airport

Launceston Airport is preparing to welcome more than 56,000 passengers through the airport over the next two weeks as school holidays get underway.

The busiest day in the holiday period is set to be this coming Monday, with almost 4,000 passengers expected through the terminals.

Melbourne is leading the way as the destination of choice, with 34,830 passengers set to fly to and from Victoria's capital.

Launceston Airport Head of Planning, Development and Customer Ilya Brucksch said the airport was well placed to accommodate the crowds.

"A lot has been done behind the scenes to prepare for the busy peaks and to ensure our passenger’s holidays get off to a smooth start," he said.

"We've flexed up operations across the business with more security, cleaners and customer service staff here to make your journey through the airport these holidays a pleasant one.

"Keep in mind our staff are working through the holiday period to help you so please, pack your patience and be rest assured we are doing our best to get you where you need to go.

"This has been the busiest start to the year on record for us and things are just heating up this winter, with Tourism Tasmania’s ‘The Off Season’ campaign driving strong inbound growth and many Tasmanians heading north to chase the winter sun.

“Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia have all added additional services to cater for the increased demand over the holiday period.

“As the northern gateway to the state and with the Tamar Valley and Cradle Mountain at our doorstep, it’s no surprise that the UNESCO City of Gastronomy Launceston is attracting the interest of holiday makers across the nation and further abroad.

"If you are heading to the airport over the coming two weeks allow plenty of time to check- in and clear security, so you can sit back with a coffee in hand and enjoy the world class views from our departures lounge."
